Lewis and Clark visited this area in the winter of 1805, and not surprisingly considered the weather to be dismal. The place they called the "Dismal Nitch" was where they spent six days wet, cold, and miserable. That is standard at the coast, but I caught a break and had a beautiful, if cold, day at the beach. I spent it touring the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, and I rented a yurt at the Cape Disappointment State Park. In addition, I dug a limit of razor clams at the low tide in nearby Long Beach, WA.
In the spirit of Beau Miles (A Mile an Hour) and primarily inspired by David Goggins who created the 4x4x48, this video covers my own run of 4x4x4. David Goggins originally popularized the 4x4x48 which is runs of four miles done every four hours, for 48 hours. This ends up being 48 miles, of course, which I would not be able to do. I attempted to do a shorter version where I did four runs of 4.5 miles each, four hours apart. I did one at 7:00 am, 11:00 am, 3:00 pm, and 7:00 pm. I loved this run! A great time was had by all. Watch the video to see if I made it!
This video is a complete and total review of the snorkeling at Ambergris Caye in Belize. We cover much of the snorkeling that is done out of Caye Caulker as well. The snorkeling covers Hol Chan Preserve, Shark Ray Alley, Mexico Rocks, the Coral Gardens, the Barge shipwreck, and three locations at Lighthouse Reef including the Blue Hole. There is also a catch and cook section at the North end of Ambergris Caye at the Bacalar Chico historic site. We also saw almost everything there was to see on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, which is included here as a bunch of random video and stills. At the end of the video, I make a few suggestions about the best snorkeling sites, and give contact information for the five different providers we used.
While I was visiting my daughter and her family in Maine, she and I did a food tour in Portland. It was amazing how many fun choices there were to see and try, and Lisa did a great job of choosing an itinerary for us. The video is a quick recap of where we went and what we ate. No exercise in this video, I apologize if you are disappointed about that!
As part of my activities in Maine in the fall of 2021 I took a rowboat and visited a couple of islands in Maine. I rowed to Little Birch to spend the first night, and then rowed on to Birch Island for a second night. I saw some fun stuff, the islands were very nice, and there were no arguments with my crew! Little Birch is a Maine Island Trail property, as was a site on Birch Island I visited. However, the campsite on the South end of Birch Island was a land trust property not managed by MITA.
In the fall of 2021 my daughter Lisa and I hiked 32 various trails in the Southern part of Maine. As I was considering all of the video I had, I decided to do a top five. So here it is!
In September of 2021 I drove from Maine to Michigan, primarily to snorkel on shipwrecks in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I snorkeled on three different shipwrecks, did a bunch of bike riding, a couple of runs, saw Mackinac Island, and visited some interesting places. I stayed at Maumee State Park, Wilderness State Park, Negwegon State Park, Long Lake County Park, and Green Lakes State Park.
There are tons of places to hike in Maine, but they tend to be smaller and more difficult to find. An organization called Gateway to Maine: Outside Partners created a scavenger hunt as a way to increase exposure to some of their properties. The hunt consisted of a dozen items to find in ten different places throughout Southern Maine. Lisa and I decided to tackle it, and did all of them within a week. As always, I had a really nice time seeing these places, almost all of which were new to me.
This video is about a day I spent camping on Vaughn's Island, a Kennebunkport Conservation Trust property and part of the Maine Island Trail. The weather was good, the sailing and rowing were relatively modest, and the island was glorious! As always, exercise and travel are a combination I love, and it just doesn't get any better than rowing to an island!
In August of 2021 I took surfing lessons with my Maine daughter and her kids. Then all of us went to Delaware to surf near the Indian River Inlet. We clearly aren't great surfers, but we had a great time seeing this new area, and surfing was quite a lot like exercise!
For the Fourth of July 2021 I went to the towns of Hermiston and Pasco to partake of their community fairs... and maybe some fair food as well.
One of my favorite activities is digging razor clams. I am not sure why, but it is quite a bit like hunting Easter Eggs, rewarding in a similar way. And, as usual when I travel, I like to exercise too, and running on the beach is also a favorite. Along the way, I also saw lots of sand dollars.
